How to Serve Hot & Greasy Foods Using Compostable Tableware
1st Sep 2026
Conducting a successful eco-friendly event comes with the stress of not compromising on quality and comfort for principle. Compostable dinnerware has come a long way in this aspect. Now, most materials are strong, dependable, leak-proof and easy to use. But most people are still paranoid about using sustainable tableware for greasy, saucy, and extremely hot food. This worry is completely unnecessary. You can trust eco-friendly materials much more than you do plastics. Here is why.
Sugarcane Bagasse

Bagasse is the fibrous residue left over after sugarcane is crushed. To make dinnerware, these fibres are pulped, wet-moulded, and pressed under extreme heat.
- Mechanical Bonding: The high-pressure moulding creates a dense, interwoven fibre network. Because the fibres are naturally high in cellulose and hemicellulose, they form a tight bond, creating a physical barrier that resists liquid penetration.
- Heat Tolerance: Bagasse tableware are naturally heat-stable up to about 100°C. It doesn’t melt like plastic or leach chemicals because it’s a thermoset-like natural structure.
- Grease Resistance: Many manufacturers add a small amount of food-grade, compostable sizing agents to the pulp to increase water and oil “beading.”
Palm Leaf

Palm leaf plates (made from the fallen leaves of the Areca palm) are the “rawest” form of compostable dinnerware.
- Waxy Cuticle: Palm leaves have a natural, built-in protective layer. This waxy coating, designed by nature, protects the living plant from tropical rain and pests. When heat-pressed, this layer acts as a natural moisture barrier.
- Three-Ply Strength: A single leaf is surprisingly thick. It consists of several layers of lignin, which provides enough structural integrity to hold hot, heavy, and oily foods for hours without leaking.
Kraft Paper

Unlike the other two, Kraft paper is a processed wood product. On its own, paper is notoriously bad with grease, so it requires “back-up.”
- Bio-Coatings: To withstand grease, Kraft paper products are usually lined with PLA (Polylactic Acid), made from corn starch. This creates a waterproof, oil-resistant “skin” over the paper.
- The “Kraft” Process: The word kraft is German for strength. The chemical pulping process removes most of the lignin, leaving behind long, strong cellulose fibres that are more tear-resistant than standard paper, even when damp.
Practical Uses Of Compostable Dinnerware
- You run a food truck that serves loaded fries. You need a sturdy, leakproof, unbendable takeout box. A Kraft paper box is the right choice for you.
- You are catering for an eco-friendly wedding party. You have to serve the traditional three-course meal with pot roasts and pies. Why not choose rustic palm leaf tableware for this occasion?
- Are you planning a birthday party for your kid? High-quality bowls and serveware are a mandate when kids are involved. Things can get really messy and even unsafe when kids are involved. Sugarcane bagasse is a great option in this scenario.
