What does ‘biodegradable’ mean?

12th Feb 2021

The term biodegradable can be used to describe anything that can be broken down by bacteria, microbes or fungi, which then dissipates into the environment.

For those of us trying to make ecologically mindful choices, the hope is that – unlike oil-based plastics and other synthetic materials – biodegradable products we use and discard will not remain in the environment.

Defining ‘green’ consumer terminology

You’ll often see terms like biodegradable, compostable and recyclable used on packaging and in marketing materials – sometimes interchangeably. What exactly do they mean?

Biodegradable materials can be broken down by micro-organisms over time.

Compostable items consist of organic matter which will break down into nutrient-rich, non-toxic materials. These can then be used as soil or fertiliser.

Recyclable products can be treated or processed for reuse, without any notable change to their composition.

Anything that is compostable is biodegradable; but not everything that is biodegradable is compostable! While some non-organic or artificial products will break down over time, they can produce harmful by-products or break into pieces that are just too small to see.

Organic biodegradable products do not do this. Yet despite decomposing like food waste, it is possible they may not be certified as ‘compostable’.

Is ‘biodegradable’ better?

Yes and no. Organic biodegradable products are certainly better for the environment. However, there are some issues. For example, organic biodegradable plastics produce greenhouse gases when they decompose.

As a consequence, compostable products can be viewed as the more eco-friendly choice. They are more often made from plant materials, such as corn starch, and therefore decompose without producing toxic waste.

Manufacturing biodegradable products

‘Biodegradable’ is sometimes used as a loose label by companies seeking to ‘greenwash’ their products: making them appear more environmentally friendly than they really are.

What these companies choose to ignore is that an ‘eco-friendly product’ is not just the sum of its materials; the way a product is prepared for use also needs to be taken into consideration.

At FOOGO Green we take care to ensure our products are manufactured in an environmentally mindful way. Our processes are sustainable, kind to the environment, and result in high quality items that are biodegradable, compostable, and reusable.

Biodegradable tableware from FOOGO Green

Eco-friendly biodegradable plates, bowls and cutlery come in many forms. The most popular materials used for this purpose include bagasse (made from a sugarcane by-product), bamboo, paper, plant-based plastics and palm leaf.

We believe palm leaf to be the best choice for the environment. Areca palm leaves are only harvested after they fall from the tree. Once collected, they are washed in fresh water and shaped in a hot compress. These are the only steps before they become beautiful, durable plates ready for any occasion. No trees are cut down or damaged. This process stops the fallen leaves from being dumped in landfill or burned. It’s the ultimate way to make the most of Nature’s gifts!

With no nasty chemicals or binding agents used at any point in the process, and the high temperatures used to shape and harden the tableware, FOOGO Green’s dinnerware is completely safe and sanitary to eat from. Our plates and bowls can withstand moderate temperatures in the microwave, so you’re safe to come back for more the next day!

Once used, you don’t need to throw palm leaf tableware into regular household waste. Our plates and bowls can be disposed of in home compost bins, where the plates will biodegrade in two to three months. They are also durable enough to be wiped clean and reused.

Our wooden cutlery, made from high quality birchwood, is also safe and sturdy. Once used, knives, forks and spoons can go straight into home compost or your food waste bin. In addition, they’re safe enough to pop into the fire pit when you’re camping or barbecuing!

Tips for disposing of your waste

Remember to compost

In general, organic matter such as food waste or non-chemically treated biodegradable products can go into home compost bins. You can also dispose of plant-based biodegradable plastics in industrial composters.

Sort your recycling

Always check packaging carefully before putting it in your recycling collection. Many compostable plastics that make their way into a recycling bins contaminate all the otherwise recyclable products.

Check what can be recycled

Just because something isn’t biodegradable or compostable, it doesn’t mean it should be condemned to landfill.

Recycling services are getting better all the time – check the item’s packaging and see how much you can reduce your footprint!
