How to have an eco-friendly Easter

Easter celebrates new life and renewal in nature. This spring season, help maintain the integrity of the environment and allow natural life to flourish by choosing natural and compostable consumables.

Eco-friendly Easter eggs

The link between chocolate and Easter is firmly established, but chocolate eggs often come with unnecessary packaging. Many ethical brands use reduced packaging, and aim to be organic and less wasteful.

Well-known chocolate brands may also use palm oil, which is a product of large-scale environmental destruction. Searching for palm oil-free chocolate can help reduce the environmental and human impact associated with chocolate consumption.

Plastic-free Easter eggs, and other sweet treats in cardboard or compostable natural packaging, are a step in the right direction. Be aware that other bars or sweets within the box may be wrapped in non-recyclable plastic.

Finding organic, low-waste and fair trade chocolate bars is another option. Try melting and moulding these to make and decorate your own chocolate eggs.

Sustainable Easter egg hunts

Hide wooden eggs instead of, or alongside, chocolate ones. These can be collected and painted, then repainted each year.

You could also swap eggs for eco-friendly gifts. From reusable straws, coffee cups and lunchboxes, to wooden jigsaws, plant seeds and wooden colouring pencils for children.

Instead of plastic bags, use natural wicker baskets or a large palm leaf bowl to collect prizes. These can be reused instead of buying new next year or repurposed as Easter decorations for the home.

Plant a wildflower garden for sustainable Easter décor

Celebrate nature at Easter by planting wildflower seeds to help pollinators, or plant vegetables for fresh produce throughout the year. As well as being good for the mind and body, gardens bring colour to the home and provide important wildlife refuges in urban environments.

Easter conjures springtime images of tulips and daffodils. However, many cut flowers are not sustainably grown or farmed, and may be wrapped in non-recyclable plastic.

Bringing in your own flowers, growing from seeds and bulbs in pots, or buying only from organic, ethical florists are better eco-friendly choices.

Catering events sustainably

A celebration of new life is at odds with making unsustainable choices. Catering for an event with compostable tableware is a small change which makes a big difference to the waste generated by gatherings.

Instead of taking up space in landfill, compostable products biodegrade harmlessly along with food scraps and garden clippings in a compost heap. No waste – only nutrients for your garden in a few months.

Hosting a large family celebration this Easter? Compostable tableware saves the resources and time that would otherwise be spent washing up after everyone.

Take an eco-picnic set to community Easter events and enjoy the Spring sunshine. Compostable tableware and sturdy birchwood cutlery are just as lightweight and convenient as plastic disposables.
