Reduce your waste with compostable party supplies

Reduce your waste with compostable party supplies

Choosing products with compostable packaging instead of those wrapped in plastic or cardboard makes a significant difference to the amount of waste we generate. It also results in nutrient-rich topsoil for gardens.

Natural straws double as decoration

The damage caused to the environment by plastic straw waste is well documented. Swapping them out for a natural alternative is an easy sustainable choice.

Natural straws also provide decoration for glass beverages, and can be used as vibrant visual accents for a range of party themes.

You could adorn colourful juice cocktails with disposable wheat straws for a tropical tiki theme. As autumn takes hold, try cosy cinnamon almond milk in cups with reusable bamboo straws.

Natural and waterproof, both wheat and bamboo straws last longer in liquid than paper straws. They also won’t end up in landfill.

Serve a biodegradable buffet

Mix and match large palm bowls full of tasty snacks with sturdy serving trays of different shapes and sizes to create an enticing display. As palm leaf tableware is fridge and freezer safe, leftover food can be covered and kept without needing to use other dishes.

Durable enough to be wiped clean and reused, you can refill palm leaf serving trays and bowls with grazing snacks or sweet treats after the buffet. When finished, reuse them around the home as natural décor – fill them with potpourri or use them for display.

Finding ways to reuse existing products means fewer resources are used producing new goods. While recycling helps, reducing overall production and waste lessens the environmental impact.

Sturdy natural wooden cutlery

You can complement palm leaf tableware with the pastoral elegance of birchwood cutlery. This modest sophistication suits all events – from eco-friendly weddings and corporate functions to plastic-free beach days or garden parties.

Birchwood is a sustainable choice for wooden cutlery as it grows faster than other types of trees, meaning less destructive land clearance is needed.

Skewers are a timeless party classic. They can be used for convenient, visually appealing food that can be nibbled while standing and chatting. There is an array of possible recipes, from traditional kebabs to fresh deconstructed salads.

Bamboo is perfect for sustainable manufacturing: it is naturally anti-microbial, needs no chemical pesticides, regenerates from its roots, and can be cut and filed for skewers and straws without any binding chemicals.

Encourage a low-waste party

For outdoor events, decorate a compost bin to collect used compostable goods and food waste. This may get guests thinking about how efficient compostable products are and the environmental impact of events.

If your party only generates compostable waste, you may not need a recycling and general rubbish bin. Compostable products make disposing of waste much easier than sorting recycling, biodegradable, and landfill waste.

Place flowers from the garden in upcycled jars or cans tied with ribbon for rustic decorations. These can be composted at the end of the night. Using fabric to make permanent, reusable decorations like bunting and tablecloths also saves waste.

Avoid food waste

A catering rule of thumb is to make two servings of each buffet food – unless you know something will be particularly popular – to avoid excessive food waste.

Send your guests away with leftovers in reusable glass jars or eco-friendly sugarcane bagasse takeaway boxes. Microwave-safe palm leaf or bagasse bowls can be used to provide a portable snack with no ill effects on the environment.
